In the area of health information security, the executive order issued by President Biden in March 2021 marked a milestone for federal agencies, encouraging them to adopt more advanced cybersecurity methodologies. One of these advanced strategies is zero trust architecture, which is spreading as a standard practice in protecting sensitive patient data from external threats, aiming to strengthen the confidentiality and correctness of medical treatments.

Collaborations and tools to address vulnerabilities

Recently, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a cybersecurity toolkit, developed in tandem with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), to address cyber vulnerabilities in the healthcare sector. Additionally, HHS is evaluating the establishment of a dedicated program management office to consistently direct zero trust initiatives, including seeking support from outside organizations to design such a framework.

Cybernetic protections in the military healthcare sector

Likewise, the military health agency Defense Health Agency (DHA) aims to raise the level of cyber security. A significant milestone was achieved by the Lyster military health clinic at Fort Novosel in Alabama, which achieved Level 4 Maturity from the Cyber Health and Readiness Inspection Program. Pat Flanders, executive director of programs for medical systems and CIO for DHA, highlights the team's commitment as crucial in strengthening the cybersecurity culture at the agency.

The FDA and the safety of medical devices

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) highlighted the importance of cybersecurity for medical devices and patient treatment in September through a new guidance document. This document recommends that the industry include specific cybersecurity design measures, labeling and documentation in pre-market submissions for cyber-risk devices.
