Miter and CISA present an extension for the Caldera platform for the security of critical infrastructures

Improve the resilience of critical infrastructures through the innovative Caldera extension for OT

The MITER Corporation and the US cybersecurity agency, CISA, have collaborated to create the “Caldera for OT” extension to protect critical infrastructure such as energy, transportation and water supplies by simulating hacker attacks to improve security and system defenses.

The MITER Corporation and the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (CISA) have introduced a new extension for the open source Caldera platform, which represents a major step forward in protecting critical infrastructure. This new extension, called Caldera for OT , is the result of collaboration between the Homesland Security Systems Engineering and Development Institute (HSSEDI) and CISA, with the goal of improving infrastructure resilience in companies in sectors such as energy, transport and water supplies.

Caldera for OT: Adversary attack emulation for OT systems

Caldera for OT represents a significant advancement in critical infrastructure security, offering a broad range of capabilities to simulate adversary attacks against operational technology (OT). This extension allows you to evaluate the security of industrial control systems (ICS) and the resulting impact on the continuity of operations. Additionally, Caldera for OT also supports Factory and Security Acceptance Testing (FAT/SAT), providing an additional tool to ensure the security of critical infrastructures.

Collaboration between CISA and HSSEDI: simulations of adversary attacks and discovery of new techniques

To accomplish this extension, CISA and HSSEDI worked together to simulate adversary attacks in CISA's Control Environment Laboratory Resource (CELR). This collaboration has enabled the identification and inclusion of new adversarial techniques into Caldera, which will be useful for critical infrastructure defenders in identifying and mitigating any vulnerabilities in OT systems.

Importance of critical infrastructure protection

The new Caldera framework for OT aims to improve the resilience of critical infrastructure, a critically important sector that includes energy, transport and water supplies. The protection of these infrastructures is essential to ensure the stability and security of a country. With increased threat awareness and the use of tools like Caldera for OT , you will be able to improve your preparedness and response capacity against cyber attacks. Additionally, this open source extension offers industrial control system defenders a valuable tool to practice and enhance critical system defenses.
