Recently, a surprising and positive result has emerged: Italy has positioned itself among the world leaders in cybersecurity. This positioning does not only concern the European context, but has a global scope. The new Global Cybersecurity Index, in its fifth edition, has been published by the International Telecommunication Union, a United Nations agency dedicated to monitoring the culture of cybersecurity. This report, which focuses on the period 2023/2024, has examined 190 countries, evaluating their level of cybersecurity through a meticulous analysis.

Evaluation parameters and results

The Global Cybersecurity Index uses five main evaluation parameters: legal, organizational, technical, cooperation and capacity development, with scores ranging from 0 to 100. Italy achieved an excellent score of 100/100, entering the T1 – Role modeling category. This category represents excellence and leading nations in the cybersecurity sector. Other levels include T2 for advanced nations and T5 for those under construction. Most countries are in the T3 levels, with a stable but not advanced cyber culture, and T4, characterized by ongoing evolution. Among the 46 countries in the T1 category, many are European, suggesting a serious commitment to cybersecurity in the region.

Italy in detail: tools and collaborations

Italy has achieved this milestone thanks to a series of integrated factors: the presence of effective national legislation on cybercrime and cybersecurity, a strong technical capacity thanks to the National CSIRT (Computer Security Incident Response Team), and a national strategy supported by the National Cybersecurity Agency. Italy also stands out for strong incentives focused on the development of a cybersecurity culture and for effective cooperation both internationally and with the private sector. These elements have allowed Italy to consolidate a prominent position in the global cybersecurity landscape.

The future of cybersecurity in Italy

Among the leading countries in cybersecurity, there are nations such as Germany, Belgium and Portugal, while the Vatican and San Marino are at the bottom, reflecting a lesser urgency in adapting to the standards. However, the growing attention to cybersecurity encourages all nations to evolve. For Italy, the path is still long and requires constant vigilance since cybercrime is constantly evolving. This recognition is nevertheless a source of pride, demonstrating that the country has built one of the most advanced infrastructures in the world. The challenge of cybersecurity is continuous, but Italy has shown that it has all it takes to face it successfully.
