The need to acquire new skills to deal with artificial intelligence
Labor market transformation in the context of generative AI: challenges and opportunities
Within the next three years, 40% of workers will have to make an effort to learn new skills to avoid their obsolescence following the advent of artificial intelligence (AI). A survey conducted by IBM revealed that generative AI will have a significant impact on business roles and skills, according to 80% of executives surveyed.
The expected changes in the world of work
All employees, at all levels, will be affected by the advancement of AI. However, the greatest impact will be felt by rank-and-file workers. According to executives, employees at the lowest level are already grappling with the changes brought about by generative AI, and this trend is expected to intensify in the coming years. In contrast, the executive and senior management sector will experience a limited impact, at only 22%, at least for the time being.
The need for retraining for workers
It is expected that within the next three years, approximately 1.4 billion workers, corresponding to 40% of the total, will have to invest in their retraining to preserve their place on the job market. At the same time, managers maintain that generative AI, represented by ChatGPT and other similar machines, will not replace humans, but will work closely with them to create new job opportunities. Sectors considered most at risk include procurement, risk and compliance departments and finance departments.
Business benefits resulting from technology
Reskilling employees is not only beneficial for individuals, but also for companies. According to the report, “technology-driven work changes generate a higher revenue growth rate, on average, by 15%.” Additionally, those who focus their attention on AI will see an even higher revenue growth rate of 36% higher than their peers. Therefore, it becomes essential to acquire new skills to remain competitive in the job market and to contribute to business growth in the era of generative AI.
